Sydney Industry in the 20th Century

During the early years of the 1900’s, one of the largest steel manufacturing plants was built in Sydney. The economic boom brought by the expansion of the coal mining industry and the opening of this plant led to the incorporation of the town in 1903. However, this industry started to fail in the 1960’s and were eventually closed permanently in 2001. The Second World War was also beneficial for Sydney because a base for the Royal Canadian Navy, named HMS Protector, was established here.

Colonel Joseph DesBarres

Sydney was founded in 1785 by Colonel Joseph DesBarres, who named the community in honor of the First Viscount Sydney, Thomas Townsend. Colonel Desbarres was the governor of the colony of Cape Breton at the time. When he arrived to the island, he brought with him a group of English settlers and soldiers who has been discharged from the British army. When the American Revolution began, a group of Loyalists joined them when they made their way north from the Thirteen Colonies.

Historic Sites in Sydney

Take the historic tour of Sydney to see many old houses and buildings that date back to the early and mid-1800’s. The oldest building in the town is that of Cossit House, which was built in 1787 by the first Protestant minister, Reverend Rama Cossit, who was a Loyalist from New Hampshire. The house has been restored to resemble as closely as possible the house as it was when it was first built. The furnishings of the home are the same ones that were used by the Cossit family.
